Frederick Arthur Bridgman

Frederick Arthur Bridgman (1847-1928) On the Terrace, Algiers
One of Bridgman's most recognized Orientalist images, "A Street Scene in Algeria", is exceptional for its biographical and historical significance. Many of its details can be considered "signature" motifs of the artist, and its subject, a pointed record of travel. In keeping with Bridgman's tendency in the 1880s to focus on intimate domestic subjects, two seated male figures are given pride of place in the center of the composition, gesticulating while they chat. Camille Bombois

Camille Bombois (1883-1970) The white horse
The paintings of his maturity are bold in color, featuring strong contrasts of black, bright reds, blues and electric pinks. Drawing from his own experiences, he often painted circus performers and landscapes with fishermen. His paintings of women are emphatic in their carnality, and his landscapes are notable in their careful attention to space, and to the effects of reflected light on water. Bombois' works are on view in many public collections, notably the Musée Maillol in Paris.

Claude Monet

Ref. Wikipedia

Paul Nash (1889-1946) The Salient, Ypres (1917)
Nash used his opportunity as a war artist to bring home the full horrors of the conflict. As he wrote to his wife from the front on 16 November, 1917:

"I am no longer an artist. I am a messenger who will bring back word from the men who are fighting to those who want the war to go on for ever. Feeble, inarticulate will be my message, but it will have a bitter truth and may it burn their lousy souls."

Franz Marc

Franz Marc (1880-1916) Aktonit Katze (1910)

Oskar Kokoschka

Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) Double Portrait of Trudl (1931) Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
For the Austrian Expressionist painter and writer Oskar Kokoschka, the years of the Great War of 1914-1918 marked a decisive period both in his personal life and in his professional career. His three-year tempestuous love affair with Alma Mahler, widow of the composer Gustav Mahler and the major inspiration for Kokoschka's work, ended badly when Alma aborted their child. Meanwhile, Kokoschka, pacifist and humanitarian by nature and education, volunteered for military duty and was gravely wounded in 1915 while fighting at the Ukranian front. Ref.
