Maria Pavlova, Early in the morning (2009), ArtNow Gallery, Russia

Konstantin Korovin

Konstantin Korovin (1861-1939) Portrait of the Actress Tatiana Liubatovich (~1880) The Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
The portrait is done in oil on canvas. The delicate stroke of the brush with the intricate detail of women’s face, accessories, dress and couch, make this image look realistic. The central subject of the painting is the actress Tatiana Liubatovich. The painter emphasizes her statue placing her on the window where the light is hitting her from the back making the women look delicate and fragile. Her creamy color dress is penetrated by the sun what demonstrates painters great ability to express the feel of the material. The black bows on her dress demonstrate class and sophistication. What stands out in this painting is the book she holds in her hands. The way she holds it expresses her calmness and enjoyment. The way women carry her self, the way she is portrayed; demonstrates her rank in the society. The background which is the scene behind the window suggest the worm season. Ref. Augustina Zygaite

Gwen John

Gwendolen Mary John (1876-1939) The Convalescent (~1923-24) The Fitzwilliam Museum

Konrad Witz

Konrad Witz (1400-1445) The Synagoge jrt (~1435) Öffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basel
Witz's earliest paintings are done on oak panels-also used by Netherlandish painters-but his later ones are on pine or fir. His paintings were attributed variously to such painters as "Giotto", "Guido da Siena", "Franco-Burgundian School", and "Follower of Geertgen tot Sint Jans", until 1896. In that year the Curator of the Basel Museum, Daniel Burckhardt grouped paintings by the same hand, some of which were in museums and others still in private collections. He recognized the Geneva Altarpiece as a work by the same person, and noted its prominent inscription "Magister Conradus de Basilea".

Andrea del Sorto

Andrea del Sorto (1486-1530) Madonna delle Arpie (Madonna of the Harpies) (1517)
En märklig målning som man funderat över. "The most recent interpretation is that it is a depiction, based on the text of the Book of Revelations, of the Virgin triumphant over evil, symbolized by the monstrous figures, the "harpies," which are in fact the "locusts" mentioned in Revelations; and besides that, bears witness to the cult of the Virgin by the clients, the conventual Franciscans."

Ellen Thesleff

Ellen Thesleff (1869-1954) Spring Night at Murole (1894)

George Frederick Watts

George Frederick Watts (1817-1904) Hope (1886) Tate Collection

"The Hermitage, however realistic an arcadian scene it appears to be, belongs to Pissarro’s seemingly unfulfilled quest for a truthful manner of depiction. Shortly afterward he abandoned this Realist style for a looser brush and the atmospheric effects for which he is popularly known, the trademarks of Impressionism."

Frederick Arthur Bridgman (1847-1928) On the Terrace, Algiers
One of Bridgman's most recognized Orientalist images, "A Street Scene in Algeria", is exceptional for its biographical and historical significance. Many of its details can be considered "signature" motifs of the artist, and its subject, a pointed record of travel. In keeping with Bridgman's tendency in the 1880s to focus on intimate domestic subjects, two seated male figures are given pride of place in the center of the composition, gesticulating while they chat.
